Info for New Distance Learning Students

Welcome to Calvin Theological Seminary! We are excited to welcome you to the Calvin Seminary community and to the Distance Learning Program! We look forward to meeting you in person on campus, but in the meantime here is some pertinent information as you prepare to begin your studies.

Bible Survey and Other Advanced Standing Exams

As the curriculum chart indicates, students are expected to take Bible Survey the summer before their first Fall Semester of classes.  Advanced Standings exams provide an opportunity for students to test out of some courses.  If you hope to test out of Bible Survey you should arrange to take the exam with a proctor by one of the dates indicated on this page.

To schedule an exam with a proctor, contact Denise Mokma at

Registering for Courses

After you enroll here at Calvin Seminary, no additional steps are needed to register for your first-semester of classes.  The registrar, Joan Beelen, will register you automatically based on the information you provided on your enrollment form.  She will contact you at your email account when you have been registered for courses.  Do not be concerned if you do not hear from her right away.  If you do have any question you can email Joan (information can be found at the Registrar’s SemLink Page).

You can find the list of books you will need for your courses here.

Part of your coursework as a degree seeking student at Calvin Seminary will include a course that also serves as an orientation to the seminary and to your program, called Gateway.  Gateway will be mostly online.   For students who began course-work Spring Semester, you will take Gateway the following Fall.  There are two things you should know about Gateway.

  • Starting in June you can log on to Canvas and find a course entitled “Gateway.” The front page will be about how to navigate Canvas and the instructions for completing Gateway will be there. This online course should be completed by the end of August.

  • The on campus portion of Gateway will take place the afternoon before the academic calendar says that the on-campus intensive week begins, as specified on the DL calendar page.

On-Campus Intensive

Plan to be on campus for the entirety of the on-campus intensive. Your specific schedule for that week will depend on the classes you are registered for. The intensive schedule will be found here.

Specifics about housing for on-campus week and other information will be covered in Gateway online.

Academic Calendar

As you make plans for next academic year, it will be helpful to refer to the academic calendar, which can be accessed here. This includes important dates in the academic year.
